Author Guidelines

Instructions to authors

Orbital – The Electronic Journal of Chemistry publishes original contributions (in Portuguese, Spanish, or English) which focus on all areas of Chemistry (including Chemistry Education and History) and their interfaces with Pharmacy, Biology, and Physics. Manuscripts should fall under one the following categories:

1. Full papers. Full papers report the results of original investigations and should be structured in the usual order of presentation, comprising Introduction, Results and Discussion, Experimental section (which may either precede or follow Results and Discussion), Conclusions, Acknowledgments, and References, according to the specificities of each manuscript.

2. Reviews. This category encompasses reflective articles and analyses of the literature output, outlining the progress and state-of-the-art in particular areas of Chemistry, from the specialist’s perspective.

3. Papers on Education. The focus of papers on Education is the teaching of Chemistry and the dissemination of innovative experiences at all levels of schooling, from elementary to higher education (undergraduate and graduate programs).

4. Short communications. Shorter texts (of up to four pages) on scientific investigations under way, reporting preliminary results achieved to date. Their purpose is to speed up communication regarding ongoing lines of investigation that have led to recent breakthroughs in particular areas of Chemistry.

5. Technical notes. Technical notes are reports on methods, techniques, equipment, or accessories developed at the authors’ laboratory.

6. Letters to the Editor. These should encourage constructive discussion between readers and authors and may concern any scientific topic relevant to the purposes of the journal, including critical discussion of recently published papers; in this case, Letters submitted by readers will be forwarded to the authors in question inviting responses to the readers’ appraisal or critique. Letters to the Editor will be published at the sole discretion of the Editorial Team and only after a response from the authors has been obtained.

 

Preparation of manuscripts

The text should be 1.5-spaced and typed in 12-pt Verdana, Franklin Gothic Book, Times New Roman, or Arial font , and saved in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format. Although the number of pages is not limited (except in the ‘Short communication’ category), contributions should not exceed 10 Mbytes, including figures, tables, schemes, and graphs. All pages should be numbered. The first page should state:

a) Title of the contribution, in the language used in the text.

b) Authors’ full names.

c) Authors’ affiliations (department, institute/school, university, city, state/province, country). Please follow the name of the author responsible for receiving correspondence with an asterisk and inform his/her e-mail addresses in a footnote on the same page.

d) An abstract of up to 200 words in the language used in the text.

e) 4-6 keywords in the language of the text.

In portuguese or spanish text, the second page should contain, in English:

f) The title of the text.

g) An abstract of up to 200 words.

h) 4-6 keywords.

The core text should begin on the third page of the manuscript. Texts should be structured according to the type of contribution chosen, using the templates provided below:

References in the text should be numbered sequentially and placed between square brackets. The list of references, also numbered between square brackets, must be included at the end of the manuscript.

Journal names are to be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (http://www.cas.org/sent.html). If an official abbreviation cannot be found, the journal’s name should be written in full. Only the initial page of the paper need be stated.

Submission of manuscripts

Registration and username (login) are required to access the area reserved for authors, in which the online submission process starts and the current status of a submission can be checked.

Contributions to Orbital should preferably be submitted online, following the five steps shown during the online submission procedure (area reserved for authors), and must include indexing information or any additional file required (such as research and instrument data). If online submission is not feasible, the materials can be sent by e-mail, or CDs and diskettes mailed to the editors.

Diretrizes para autores

Orbital – Revista Eletrônica de Química aceita como contribuição textos inéditos (em português, espanhol ou inglês) referentes a todas as áreas da Química (incluindo Ensino e História da Química) e suas interfaces com Farmácia, Biologia e Física. A contribuição científica deve se enquadrar em uma das modalidades a seguir:

1. Artigo original completo. Esta modalidade refere-se a trabalhos de pesquisa inéditos. Devem seguir a forma usual de apresentação, contendo Introdução, Resultados e Discussão, Parte Experimental (que pode preceder a seção de Resultados e Discussão), Conclusão, Agradecimentos e Referências, de acordo com as peculiaridades de cada trabalho.

2. Artigo de revisão. Esta modalidade destina-se à apresentação de artigos de reflexão e à análise de pesquisa bibliográfica que reflita o progresso e estado atual de avanço de uma área especifica da Química, do ponto de vista do especialista.

3. Artigo sobre Educação. Refere-se a trabalhos relacionados ao ensino de Química e à divulgação de experiências inovadoras nos ensinos fundamental, médio e superior (graduação e pós-graduação). Comunicações breves de relatos de experiências acadêmicas ou profissionais, com evidências metodologicamente adequadas, também se enquandram nesta modalidade.

4. Comunicação breve. Artigo curto (com até quatro páginas) sobre trabalho científico que ainda esteja sendo realizado, relatando resultados preliminares de pesquisa. Tem a função de agilizar a difusão do andamento de novas descobertas em determinadas áreas da Química.

5. Nota técnica. Destinada à comunicação de métodos, técnicas, aparelhagens ou acessórios desenvolvidos no laboratório dos autores do texto.

6. Carta ao Editor. Esta modalidade tem por objetivo fomentar o debate profícuo entre leitores e autores. Podem incidir sobre qualquer questão científica pertinente para os propósitos da revista, incluindo a discussão crítica de artigos publicados recentemente na revista; nesse caso, o texto submetido pelo leitor será encaminhado aos autores do artigo comentado, para que respondam às críticas ou elogios e a publicação de Carta ao Editor será feita a critério da Equipe Editorial e somente quando houver uma resposta dos autores.

Preparação de textos

Todos os trabalhos devem ser digitados em fonte Verdana, Franklin Gothic Book, Times New Roman ou Arial de tamanho 12 em entrelinha 1,5 e em formato Microsoft Word, OpenOffice ou RTF. Desde que não ultrapasse um total de 10 Mbytes, a quantidade de páginas é ilimitada (exceto na categoria ‘Comunicação breve’), incluindo figuras, tabelas, esquemas e gráficos. Todas as páginas devem ser numeradas, sendo que a primeira deverá conter:

a) Título do trabalho no idioma principal do texto.

b) Nome dos autores (por extenso preferencialmente).

c) Vinculação dos autores (informar departamento, instituto ou faculdade, universidade, cidade, estado e país). Acrescentar um asterisco ao final do nome do autor encarregado da correspondência e indicar seu e-mail no rodapé dessa página.

d) Resumo no idioma principal do texto, com no máximo 200 palavras.

e) 4-6 palavras-chave na língua do texto.

O texto deverá conter na segunda página, em inglês:

f) Título.

g) Resumo (abstract), com no máximo 200 palavras.

h) 4-6 palavras-chave (keywords).

A partir da terceira página deve ser exposto o trabalho, estruturado de acordo com a modalidade escolhida. Para tanto, deve-se utilizar o modelo (template) disponível para a modalidade pertinente:

As referências serão numeradas consecutivamente entre colchetes no texto. A lista de referências, também numeradas entre colchetes, deverá ser apresentada no final do texto.

A abreviatura da revista deverá estar de acordo com o convencionado no Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (ver http://www.cas.org/sent.html). Caso a abreviatura autorizada da revista não possa ser localizada, deve-se citar o título completo. Apenas a página inicial do artigo deve ser indicada.

Submissão dos manuscritos

Cadastro e nome de usuário (login) são necessários para acesso à área restrita a autores, onde se inicia o processo de submissão de documentos online, e para verificação do andamento das submissões.

As contribuições para a revista Orbital devem ser enviadas online, assim como as informações de indexação ou quaisquer arquivos adicionais (tais como dados de pesquisa e instrumentos), conforme os cinco passos descritos durante a submissão online (área restrita do autor). Não sendo possível a submissão por esse meio, poderá ser realizada via e-mail ou pelo envio de disquetes ou CDs endereçados aos editores.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist
